Urinary Incontinence

Types of Incontinence:


I. Stress Incontinence

Urine leaks out when stress (pressure) is put on the bladder. For instance, leakage may happen during a cough or sneeze.

Symptoms:
A woman with stress incontinence may leak when she:

o       Coughs, sneezes of laughs.

o       Exercises or does other physcial activity.

o       Lifts something heavy.

o       Gets up from a bed or chair.

Treatment Options:

o       Kegel Exercises

o       Pessaries

o       Medication

o       Time Voiding

o       Bulking Injections

o       Surgery



II. Urge Incontinence

This is often referred to as “overactive bladder.”  Women with problem may feel a strong, uncontrollable need to urinate, leading to leaking. They may also feel the need to urinate often.

Symptoms:
A woman with urge incontinence may:

o       Have an accident if she doesn't get to a bathroom quickly.

o       Go to the bathroom often.

o       Go to the bathroom two times or more at night.

o       Urinate in small amounts.

Treatment Options:

o       Kegel Exercises

o       Stimulator Implants

o       Medication

o       Time Voiding

o       Bladder Retaining

o       Botox Injections



III. Overflow Incontinence

The bladder doesn’t empty normally and becomes very full. Urine may dribble out. The individual may also feel that their bladder never completely empties.

Symptoms:
A woman with overflow incontinence may:

o       Get up often at night to urinate.

o       Urinate only a little each time.

o       Have a weak dribbling urine stream.

o       Leak small amounts of urine.

o       Sometimes not be able to urinate.

Treatment Options:

o       Stimulator Implants

o       Self Catheterization



IV. Mixed Incontinence

Both stress and urge incontinence are present.
